What is a macaron?

a red velvet macaron

A macaron (pronounced ma-ka-rohn) is a French cookie sandwich made up of two meringue-based cookies with any variety of fillings sandwiched in between! On the most basic level, a macaron is composed of egg whites, sugar, and almond flour, making it naturally gluten free! Fun fact: the macaron was first invented in 1533 for the wedding of Catherine de Medici to the Duc d’Orleans. However, macarons didn’t become popular here in America until the 2000s! Talk about a vintage cookie!

So, what makes macarons so special?

They’re crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside, light-as-air, and deliciously sweet. They’re also amazingly versatile, being a perfect canvas for an infinite amount of flavor and filling combinations!
